Clan Ma Ancestral Hall

The Clan Ma Ancestral Hall is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Clan Ma Ancestral Hall is located in front of the ancient Niuguolang Village, to the left of the ancestral temple of Shujianzu and to the right of the Shaogong Ma Ancestral Hall. It was first built in the third year of the Yanyou era during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty (1316). It underwent renovations during both the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the most recent one taking place in 1997. The hall faces west and measures 10.7 meters in width and 26.5 meters in depth. It has a three-bay, three-courtyard layout with four corridors and two courtyards, forming a traditional enclosed courtyard structure. The building is constructed with a combination of brick, wood, and stone materials, featuring grey brick walls, a mixed beam frame of raised beams and through-tenon joints, a flush-gable roof, sculpted dragon boat ridges in grey plaster, and plain grey tiles. Its pillars, door frames, and wall corners are all made of red stone. The door couplet reads “Dragon Veins Converge Here, A Noble Family’s Legacy,” and the horizontal plaque above the entrance reads “Glory of Martial Valor.” The central hall is inscribed with the plaque “Hall of Love and Sincerity.” The rear hall serves as a sacrificial chamber enshrining the ancestral tablets of the fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of the Clan Ma from the Song Dynasty. This ancestral hall embodies the architectural characteristics of clan halls in Dongguan during the Qing Dynasty and serves as historical material for the study of period architecture. It also holds significant value for researching the history of the Niuguolang lineage.
