Yun Gang Ancient Temple

Yun Gang Ancient Temple is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Yun Gang Ancient Temple is located in Puxin Village, Shipai, Dongguan. It is said to have been built during the Song Dynasty and is the only ancient structure in Dongguan with inscriptions from renovations during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Over the centuries, Yun Gang Ancient Temple once fell into ruin, underwent several restorations, and was converted into a community school for teaching and education. Next to the temple is the Hongsheng Palace, which enshrines the Guangli Hongsheng King. The Hongsheng King is a sea deity worshipped along the southern coastal regions.

The door socket stones of Yun Gang Ancient Temple feature exquisite carvings, and its beams and brackets are decorated with carvings of qilin and fish-dragons. It is the only ancient structure in Dongguan discovered so far that bears inscriptions from both the Ming and Qing dynasties, possessing high historical, artistic, and scientific value.

The first and second sections of Hongsheng Palace have doors connecting to Yun Gang Community School. During the 2009 restoration, a stone carving component dated to the 33rd year of the Wanli era in the Ming Dynasty (1605 AD) was unearthed.

Originally a religious site, Yun Gang Ancient Temple was transformed into Yun Gang Community School in 1881 (the 7th year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty) by Wang Debao, a native of Puxin who served as the Fujian Provincial Administration Commissioner. It continued to function as a school until the early days of the Liberation, hence it is also known as Yun Gang Community School.

Yun Gang Ancient Temple harmoniously embraces Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Adjacent to a bustling street, it is shaded by towering banyan trees and features serene winding paths.

In 2004, Yun Gang Ancient Temple was listed as a Dongguan municipal cultural heritage site; in 2006, incense burning resumed, making it a spiritual sanctuary for devotees; in 2012, it became a provincial cultural heritage site in Guangdong.

Puxin Village: Located in the central area of Shipai Town, Dongguan, Puxin Village lies in the lower reaches of the Dong River, enjoying a superior geographical position. Covering an area of two square kilometers, it has a permanent population of over 1,400. The village is traversed by Shipai Avenue, the main road of the town, borders the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway to the west, faces Boluo County in Huizhou City across the river to the north, and enjoys convenient water and land transportation. It is 23 kilometers from downtown Dongguan.
