Former Residence of Deng Erya

The former residence of Deng Erya is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

The former residence of Deng Erya is located on Siqian Street, Dongzheng Community, Guancheng District, Dongguan City. It faces south with its back to the north, and the exact year of its initial construction is unknown. Currently, two structurally identical houses are preserved. Both have four bays, are 14 meters wide and 16 meters deep, featuring bluestone plinths and door frames, sliding doors, grey brick walls, flush gable roofs, herringbone gables, and boat-shaped roof ridges. Deng Erya (1884–1954), a native of Dongguan, Guangdong, was born in Beijing. From an early age, he was immersed in his family's scholarly traditions, studying philology. In his youth, he focused on seal carving, calligraphy, and textual criticism, learning seal engraving under He Zouya. In 1899, he entered Guangya Academy. In 1905, he went to Japan with his wife and eldest son, Deng Xiaoya, initially to study medicine but later switched to fine arts. He returned to China in 1910 and worked as an elementary school teacher. The following year, he co-founded the "Times Pictorial" and "Appreciation of the Extraordinary Pictorial" with Pan Dawei and others. In 1912, he established the Guangzhou branch of the Zhen Society with Huang Jie and others.

Dongzheng Community: Dongzheng Community in Guancheng District is located in the northeast part of Dongguan City’s urban core. It borders Yajiaowei to the east, the city’s People’s Park to the south, Xizheng Road to the west, and the canal to the north. The community spans approximately 2.5 square kilometers and has a registered population of 21,000. The Dongzheng Community Party Working Committee oversees three party branches and governs seven resident groups: Dongzheng, Xuanhua, Anjing, Xinhe, Hongyu, Cuijing, and Jiaowei.
