Dongguan Daosheng Garden

Daosheng Garden is located in Daofu Lane, Xiyu, Guancheng District, Dongguan City. It was built by Zhang Jiamo, the nephew of Zhang Jingxiu, the founder of Keyuan Garden in late Qing Dynasty Dongguan. Originally covering an area of about 750 square meters, the garden featured a mid-yard layout arranged in series with a flat courtyard and a water courtyard. Today, after a century of vicissitudes, only a few dilapidated old houses remain—their walls collapsed, doors and windows gone. The houses face southeast with their backs to the northwest, featuring red sandstone plinths and door frames, polished blue brick walls, and flush gable roofs. The front section has a gable and hip roof with a herringbone gable, the middle section a gable and hip roof with “pot-ear” gables, and the rear section a gable and hip roof with horse-head gables. In the past, Ju Chao and Ju Lian, the pioneers of the Lingnan School of Painting, lived in Daosheng Garden for as long as ten years and devoted themselves to painting there. This made both Daosheng Garden and Keyuan Garden important birthplaces of the Lingnan School of Painting.
