Remnants of Hong Rengan’s Shelter in Niuyinpu

The Remnants of Hong Rengan’s Shelter in Niuyinpu are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

The Remnants of Hong Rengan’s Shelter in Niuyinpu are located in Niuyinpu, Tangxia Town, Dongguan.

The site includes the ruins of Yongpei Study Hall, Gospel Church, Dinghe Church, the Zhang Caiting Memorial Monument, and the tomb of Zhang Shenghe and his wife.

In the second year of the Xianfeng era (April 1852), Hong Rengan disguised himself as a “fortune-teller” and secretly returned to mainland China from Hong Kong, hiding in the home of his friend Zhang Caiting in Niuyinpu Village, Dongguan. He served as a tutor at Yongpei Study Hall for a full year. Later, he disguised himself again and left the village to return to Hong Kong. (Afterwards, Zhang Caiting was rewarded for his role in protecting the Prince Gan—Hong Rengan—and was appointed Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, honored as the “Six Thousand Years Old,” and granted a piece of yellow silk.)

The Gospel Church, built in 1919, is part of the Hong Rengan Shelter historical site. Before the liberation, it was mainly used for Christian religious activities. In 1953, it was converted into Chongzhen Primary School.

Yong’an Platform is a watchtower annexed to the Gospel Church. The front is inscribed with the three large characters “永安臺” (Yong’an Platform).

Dinghe Church, built in 1912, is also part of the Hong Rengan Shelter site. It served as the residence of Pastor Zhang Shenghe during his missionary work in Tangxia. (Zhang Shenghe was the son of Zhang Caiting.)

The Taiping Rebellion once flourished vigorously across China. Many places in Guangdong still retain historical relics from the revolution. This shelter site of Hong Rengan in Dongguan preserves well-preserved ancient architecture with a strong traditional atmosphere, making it a worthwhile place to visit.

On November 8, 2008, the General Office of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province issued the “Notice on the Announcement of the Fifth Batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units,” in which the Remnants of Hong Rengan’s Shelter in Niuyinpu were included in the list of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Tangxia Town: Located in the southeastern part of Dongguan, Tangxia Town borders Qingxi Town to the east, Huangjiang Town to the west, Zhangmutou Town to the north, and Fenggang Town and Guanlan Subdistrict of Shenzhen to the south. It is traversed by the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, Longlin Expressway, and Dongshen Highway, making it a transportation hub in southeastern Dongguan.
