Cape Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument
The Cape Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is located in Wangzhou, Wangjiao Village, Wangniudun Town, Dongguan City. It was built in April 1967 by the Revolutionary Committee of the People's Commune of Wangniudun. Covering an area of approximately 156.76 square meters, the monument stands about 4.6 meters tall and is made of concrete. The front of the monument bears eight vertically inscribed characters: “Revolutionary Martyrs Live Forever.”
In the spring of 1945, a detachment of the First Brigade of the Dongjiang Column was active in the water town area. The Japanese army colluded with bandits in an attempt to encircle and annihilate the Dongjiang Column. The detachment decided to deploy part of its forces to advance toward Jiaoli and Cape, luring the enemy into a trap to disrupt their encirclement plan.
At 8 p.m. on April 17, the detachment set off by boat from Lucun and quickly occupied Cape and Jiaoli. The main force was positioned on the front line at Jiaoli, while only an independent squadron was stationed at Cape. After occupying Cape, the independent squadron built simple fortifications on the position. Thirty-eight guerrilla fighters of the squadron and over 60 local militiamen held key points around Cape, ready to repel any approaching enemy.
At dawn on April 22, a regiment of the 45th Division of the puppet army along with Liu Faru’s bandit forces — totaling over 700 men — launched a tidal wave-like assault from several directions including Julongjiang, Liaosha, Shimian, and Jianwu Village. Under the command of Independent Squadron Leader Zhou Kang, the soldiers and militiamen of Cape immediately engaged in battle, repelling the enemy’s repeated attacks. Around 9 a.m., the middle section of the Chaoyang watchtower in Shangfang was hit by a shell. The soldiers and militiamen stationed there immediately relocated and continued the fight. Militiaman Chen Lirong was fatally struck by shrapnel while moving to the junction between Zhongfang and Xiafang. At 2 p.m., the enemy launched another attack. Due to being heavily outnumbered and running low on supplies, the main force strategically retreated to preserve strength, leaving behind a small contingent of soldiers and militiamen to provide cover.
At this critical moment, the bandit forces of Huang Teng approached stealthily along the river from Julongjiang, creating an extremely perilous situation. The soldiers and militiamen assigned to cover the retreat, led by Fan Mei and Chen Shengbang, organized themselves into groups of 20 and dispersed to snipe at the enemy, protecting the withdrawal of their comrades. Around 4 p.m., Fan Mei was struck in the chest by a volley of bullets and fell forever on the tomb mounds in the Shangfang lychee orchard. During the retreat, militiaman Chen Shengbang was also fatally shot.
The detachment and civilians were safely evacuated. The enemy found Cape Village empty and retreated shamefully, carrying over 30 bodies. The Battle of Cape effectively safeguarded the right flank of the Jiaoli front and thwarted the enemy’s plot of a pincer attack.
To commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in this battle, the Wangniudun Commune built the Cape Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument. (By Tang Weiming, Wangniudun Town Cultural Station)
