Former Residence of Lai Chengji

The former residence of Lai Chengji is located at No. 8, Lane 2, Renfengfang, Xincun Community, Wanjiang Subdistrict, with GPS coordinates: 23°02'12.1"N, 113°41'02.4"E, and an elevation of 5 meters.

Lai Chengji was born in 1907 in Xincun Village, Wanjiang. As a child, he attended private school for several years before working at the “Guangchanglong” tinware shop founded by his father in Guancheng. In the autumn of 1925, following the May Thirtieth Incident, trade unions were organized across various industries in Dongguan, and he was elected chairman of the Guancheng Copper, Iron, and Tin Workers’ Union, as well as chairman of the Guancheng Candy and Sauce Garden Workers’ Union. In the autumn of 1925, during the Second Eastern Expedition of the National Revolutionary Army, he mobilized workers to help transport supplies for the expeditionary forces. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in February 1926 and was appointed secretary of the Guancheng Workers’ Branch of the Dongguan Local Executive Committee of the CCP in June of the same year. In January 1927, he was elected as an executive committee member of the Dongguan County Federation of Trade Unions.

On April 15, 1927, a massacre occurred in Guangzhou, and the terror spread to Dongguan. Lai Chengji remained in hiding at Guangchanglong in Guancheng, persisting in underground struggle. In the autumn of 1927, the CCP Dongguan County Committee was established, and Lai Chengji became a committee member. He connected with young workers in Guancheng and nearby areas, promoting the CCP’s land revolution ideals. In March 1928, he was elected secretary of the CCP Dongguan County Committee, also taking charge of the Organization and Finance Departments. The Dongguan and Bao’an County Committees mobilized workers’ and peasants’ armed forces, establishing armed strongholds centered around the Dongshan area on the Dongbao border, where they carried out land revolution. In November of the same year, Lai Chengji was elected as a member of the CCP Guangdong Provincial Committee at the Second Expanded Meeting of the Provincial Committee. On December 7, the county party’s communication hub, Guangchanglong, was raided by the Kuomintang, and Lai Chengji went into hiding in his hometown, Jinaozhou, to continue the struggle. In the spring of 1929, he was ordered to move to Hong Kong. Soon after, he was appointed by the Provincial Committee as a member of the CCP Guangzhou Municipal Committee and returned to Guangzhou to establish the municipal party headquarters. In March, when he arrived in Guangzhou by boat from Hong Kong, he was arrested by the Kuomintang. After his arrest, he endured severe torture but remained resolute until he was ultimately executed at the age of 22.

The former residence of Lai Chengji was originally a Qing Dynasty-era single-story house covering an area of about 35 square meters. By the end of the 20th century, Lai’s relatives had renovated it into a three-story brick-concrete building.
