The Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion
The Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion is located on the northern side of Tongling Mountain in Xiakou Village, Dongcheng District, Dongguan City. It was funded and constructed by the Dongguan Municipal Government in July 1997. On October 15, 1998, the municipal Party committee and government held a commemorative meeting for the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Model Militia Team and the completion ceremony of the Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion.
Walking up the steps along the northern peak of Tongling Mountain, you will see the Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion standing at the mountaintop. Lush green pines line both sides of the stairs, extending all the way to the front of the pavilion. The memorial pavilion features a four-cornered pavilion structure, standing 10 meters tall with three levels in total. The front of the ground level displays a plaque inscribed with “Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion.” Inside the pavilion stands an anti-Japanese memorial stele. The entire memorial pavilion covers an area of approximately 1,480 square meters.
On October 12, 1938, Japanese forces landed at Daya Bay. Shilong, Guangzhou, and Humen fell one after another, leaving Dongcheng in imminent danger. On October 15, the Dongguan County Committee of the Chinese Communist Party quickly formed the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Model Militia Team to resist the Japanese invasion. On October 19, the Dongguan County Committee decided that He Yucheng, the political instructor of the Social Training Corps, and Yan Qi, the deputy commander, would lead over 200 members of the Model Militia Team and the Reserve Militia Team to the Liuhua frontline. They engaged in battles at Xiakou, Jingshan, Xihu, and Aozhitang. On November 13, to strike back against the enemy who were burning, killing, and looting north of the river, He and Yan led over 40 people across the river. With the coordination of the Shijie Liuwu Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Team, they fought fiercely against the Japanese cavalry. Eleven soldiers including Wang Shangqian sacrificed their lives, and the Liuwu Self-Defense Team also lost 11 members. After suffering heavy losses, the enemy retreated to Shilong.
The Battle of Liuhua was one of the earlier organized resistances carried out by the local Chinese Communist Party leadership in Guangdong against the invading Japanese forces after their landing in South China. It boosted the morale of the people of Dongguan and became a glorious chapter in the history of Dongguan’s resistance war.
