Dongguan Anti-Japanese Pavilion Monument

The Dongguan Anti-Japanese Pavilion Monument is located on the ancient city wall at the northern side of Yushan Hill in Dongguan People’s Park, Guancheng District, Dongguan City. In October 1988, the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government built it to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Model Militia Team. The memorial pavilion features a round hip-and-gable roof covered with glazed tiles, supported by four round pillars, covering an area of approximately 18 square meters. In the center of the pavilion stands a stone stele erected by the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government in December 1993, briefly narrating the deeds of the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Model Militia Team in resisting the Japanese army in areas such as Liuhua.

On October 12, 1938, the Japanese army landed at Daya Bay. On October 15, the Dongguan County Central Committee of the Communist Party of China formed the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Model Militia Team. It later joined forces with the regular militia team under the county social training corps, which was also under CPC control, and advanced to the front lines in Shilong and Humen to fight the Japanese invaders, achieving victories against the enemy in Liuhua and Baisha. In January 1939, various anti-Japanese armed forces continuing the struggle behind enemy lines in eastern Guangdong and Bao’an were combined into the Dongbao-Huizhou Border People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Brigade, with Wang Zuoyao as brigade commander and He Yucheng as political instructor. Over 70 others went to Huiyang to join the Hui-Bao People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps led by Zeng Sheng. Later, the forces under Zeng and Wang merged and developed into the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces during the war of resistance, becoming a shining banner of resistance in South China. The people of Dongguan affectionately referred to the model militiamen as “Old Models.”

Today, the Anti-Japanese Pavilion has become a scenic spot in People’s Park and an important site for patriotic education.
