The predecessor of Dongpu Primary School was the Li Clan Ancestral Hall, originally constructed during the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty. It was rebuilt in the 24th year of the Qianlong reign (1769), renovated in the 11th year of the Daoguang reign (1831), and later collapsed due to termite damage before being reconstructed again in the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935). It faces south with a north orientation, featuring a three-courtyard layout with three bays per row, spanning 11.60 meters in width and 30.80 meters in depth. The structure is built with a combination of brick, wood, and stone, topped with a flush gable roof, and employs a hybrid beam framework of raised beams and through-tenon joints. The door frame and baseboard are made of red sandstone.

In the spring of 1937, patriotic youth Li Yizhi founded Dongpu Primary School in Shangjiangcheng and was elected as its principal. He turned the school into an important site for anti-Japanese salvation propaganda activities. Together with the teachers, he carefully compiled the “Three-Character Scripture for Salvation,” organizing and mobilizing students to recite and distribute it in public spaces around Guancheng. Teachers and students of Dongpu Primary School also utilized holidays to visit nearby villages, using flexible methods to teach cultural knowledge and promote resistance against Japan among the masses.

Dongpu Primary School served as a contact point for the underground Chinese Communist Party in Shangjiangcheng during the Anti-Japanese War. Under the education and influence of Dongpu Primary School, many students embarked on revolutionary paths, including notable figures such as Li Yunxiang, a soldier of the Dongjiang Column and a martyr of the Volunteer Army. After the liberation of Dongguan, Dongpu Primary School continued to operate. In March 2002, the school was relocated, and the original site was repurposed as the Shangjiangcheng Senior Citizens Activity Center in 2011.

In January 2004, the former site of Dongpu Primary School was designated as a Dongguan Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government.
