Site of the Liang Deming Uprising

The site of the Liang Deming Uprising is located at the Yadan Ancestral Hall in Huangan Village, Houjie Town (demolished in the 1970s and rebuilt as the Huangan Village Cultural Center), with GPS coordinates: 22°55'43.2"N, 113°42'46"E, and an elevation of 37 meters.

In January 1942, after the establishment of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column, the anti-Japanese guerrilla warfare in the enemy’s rear in Guangdong saw significant development, laying the foundation for the later formation of the East River Column. In October 1942, to strengthen the work in the enemy’s rear along both sides of the Guan-Tai Highway and establish contact with brother units in the Pearl River Delta, the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column established the Guan-Tai Line Enemy Rear Work Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Wang Zuoyao, Deputy Commander of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column, also served as the secretary. The leadership office was stationed in Houjie, overseeing the enemy rear work in the areas along the Guan-Tai and Bao-Tai lines.

On November 8, 1943, after patient persuasion and education by the Guan-Tai Line Enemy Rear Work Committee of the CCP and the local Dongguan organization of the CCP, Liang Deming, acting commander of the 89th Regiment and commander of the First Battalion of the 30th Puppet Division stationed along the Guan-Tai line in Houjie, led the First Battalion and one machine-gun artillery company to join the anti-Japanese guerrillas in Huangan Village and officially announced their uprising. The uprising involved over 130 officers and soldiers, equipped with one heavy and one light machine gun each, and 120 rifles. They were later incorporated into the Bao’an Battalion of the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces, with Liang Deming appointed as battalion commander.

Liang Deming’s defection inspired the anti-Japanese will of the military and civilians in the enemy’s rear in Dongguan, dealt a blow to the arrogance of the enemy and puppet forces, and stands as a successful example of the local party organization in Dongguan persuading enemy troops to defect.
