Shangtun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument

The Shangtun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is located atop Diniu Ridge in Shangtun Village, Liaobu Town, Dongguan City. It was built in the summer of 1970 by the Liaobu Commune with funding from the Dongguan County People's Government to commemorate revolutionary martyrs such as Zhong Shui and Zhong Chu, who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Liberation War. In 1992, the monument was renovated with funding from the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau by the Liaobu Town Government. The base of the monument covers an area of 6.25 square meters. The monument itself is 6 meters tall, 1.6 meters wide, and has a trapezoidal shape, constructed with brick, stone, and cement. The front of the monument bears seven large characters: “Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument.”

Zhong Chu (1925–1943), also known as Zhong Zanchu, was a native of Shangtun Village, Liaobu Town. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in the winter of 1941. He subsequently joined the anti-Japanese guerrilla forces and served as a squad leader. In early February 1943, Kuomintang die-hard troops launched a surprise attack on the guerrilla force’s Sankui Tax Station. To distract the enemy and protect the station, Zhong Chu engaged in battle and unfortunately was shot and killed.

Zhong Shui (1924–1947) was a native of Shangtun Village, Liaobu Town. In 1943, he served as the captain of the Wugong Team on the Guan-Zhang Line, organized by the Third Brigade of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces. He often led his team in raids on Japanese puppet army strongholds along the railway. In February 1947, after the Dongguan People’s Armed Forces attacked the Meitang stronghold, they encountered a battle with the Kuomintang army during their retreat. Zhong Shui, then a squad leader, was shot and wounded. While recovering, he was hunted down by the enemy and was executed heroically in Dongcheng in May 1947.

Shangtun Village: Located in the southwestern part of Liaobu Town, Dongguan City, Shangtun Village borders the Liaobu Auto City to the east, connects to Songshan Lake Avenue to the south, neighbors Dongcheng District to the west, and links with Hengkeng Village to the north. The village consists of seven villager groups, with a permanent resident population of 3,295, over 20,000 migrant residents, and covers a total area of 3.5 square kilometers.

Liaobu Town is situated at the center of Dongguan City, and Shangtun serves as a key transportation hub within the town.
