Floating Bamboo Hill Martyrs' Monument

The Floating Bamboo Hill Martyrs' Monument is located atop Lutou Ridge in Floating Bamboo Hill Village, Liaobu Town, Dongguan City. To commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Floating Bamboo Hill in 1949, the Liaobu Town government constructed this monument in August 1974. In 1997, with funding from the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, the Liaobu Town government renovated the monument.

On June 21, 1949, Li Guiping, the military commissioner of the New First Battalion of the Third Regiment of the Dongjiang First Detachment of the Guangdong-Guangxi-Hunan Border Column, and Liu Hui, the political instructor, led the Second Company (Huanglong Team) from Dalingshan to the Guanzhang Highway to destroy a bridge and cut telephone lines in order to mislead the enemy. That night, they stayed in Floating Bamboo Hill Village. Around 600 enemy troops from the Bao 14th Regiment stationed in Liaobu and the County Police Brigade surrounded the village at dawn on June 22. Before daybreak, the enemy launched a fierce attack. The Huanglong Team fought back hastily. Li and Liu led two platoons in a breakout, while Deputy Company Commander Long Ruobing led two squads to break through from Dagu Ridge, suffering heavy casualties. The Youngster Squad was trapped in the village and fought desperately for three hours. In this breakout battle, 13 soldiers including Zhang Xiang, Zhu Guoliang, Wu Sheng, and Li Xiang were killed, six were captured, and several others including Platoon Leader Wang Wen were wounded.

The monument covers an area of 25 square meters and is built with lime-sand cement bricks. Its main structure is a stepped-shaped stone tablet standing 4 meters tall. At the top of the tablet is a red five-pointed star, and the front is inscribed with seven large Chinese characters reading “Revolutionary Martyrs Monument.” Below the tablet is a cubic base measuring 3.4 meters on each side and 1.2 meters in height. The front of the base is inlaid with a marble plaque engraved with an epitaph. The area around the monument is lush with trees, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere.
