Former Site of Dapianmei Tax Station

The former site of the Dapianmei Tax Station is located at Chenjiating in Dapianmei Village, Dalingshan Town, Dongguan City. Also known as Wulang Family School, it covers a length of 11.6 meters, a width of 14.1 meters, and has an area of approximately 163 square meters. It is a Qing Dynasty building consisting of a single courtyard, one entryway, and four parallel rooms.

In December 1943, after the establishment of the East River Column, in order to break through the enemy’s economic blockade and ensure supplies for the troops, the East River Column headquarters decided to establish the Western Route Taxation General Station and set up tax collection substations across various locations. The Dapianmei Tax Station was one of the substations under the Western Route Taxation General Station, with Jia Hua serving as its station chief. During the day, tax officers went to market towns such as Lianping Market, Dasha Market, Datang Market, and Yangwu Market to collect taxes, returning to the tax station in the evening to hand over the collected funds. The consolidated taxes were then forwarded to the Western Route General Station.

In addition to carrying out tax collection duties, the station staff frequently visited villages to conduct anti-Japanese salvation propaganda, organizing resistance groups such as Farmer Resistance Associations, Youth Resistance Associations, and militias. They mobilized the public to assist guerrilla forces in gathering and transmitting intelligence, as well as actively joining the fight and enlisting in the army.

In the winter of 1945, as the Kuomintang sought to seize the fruits of the anti-Japanese war victory and launched the civil war, the anti-Japanese democratic government in Dalingshan Mountain went underground, making it impossible for the tax station to collect taxes openly. The station staff also shifted to covert activities. In June 1946, when the East River Column withdrew northward, the tax station was relocated elsewhere.

Dapianmei Village: Dapianmei Village is located approximately 3 kilometers southwest of the Dalingshan Town government seat. It borders Longjiang Village and Ailinghan Village to the east, connects to Dalingshan Village to the south, lies adjacent to Jinjizui Reservoir to the west, and is connected to Baihuadong Village and Taigongling Village to the north. The village covers a total area of 2.6 square kilometers, including 150 acres of arable land and 1,300 acres of forested mountain land. The Hou-Da Road runs from northwest to southeast through the central part of the village.

Legend has it that Dapianmei Village was established in the Shunyuan era (1457) of the Ming Dynasty. There was a 700-acre field to the west of the village, and the settlement was built at the far end of this field, hence originally named “Datianwei” (Big Field End).
