Weigao Ancestral Hall — Former Site of the Dongjiang Column’s Bivouac

Weigao Ancestral Hall — Former Site of the Dongjiang Column’s Bivouac is located in Xiasha Village Group, Xiasha Village, Shipai Town. GPS coordinates: 23°03'38.5" N, 113°57'19.2" E, at an elevation of 8 meters.

Before liberation, Xiasha Village was called Shabao Li. In the second half of 1940, the underground Communist Party used the school in Shabao Li as a base to gradually establish an underground organization. Underground party members, disguised as teachers, carried out secret intelligence work, actively promoted resistance against Japan, and mobilized the masses to join the Dongjiang guerrilla forces.

Thanks to the support of the underground party organization, the Dongjiang Column also used Xiasha as a base for bivouacs and rest. In February 1944, after the establishment of the Tiandong Brigade of the Dongjiang Column, they often bivouacked at Weigao Ancestral Hall in Shabao Li, with over 100 members each time, sleeping on the floor of the ancestral hall. Shabao Li is close to Hengli, and there were Japanese military watchtowers nearby that frequently used binoculars to monitor the movements of the anti-Japanese guerrillas. However, several large banyan trees in front of Shabao Li village blocked the Japanese line of sight. When guerrilla fighters bivouacked at Weigao Ancestral Hall, they kept the main gate closed. The ancestral hall had a side door, which opened onto a small alley. Under the very noses of the Japanese, the fighters entered and exited through the side door to carry out activities and strike against the Japanese.

The exact date of construction of Weigao Ancestral Hall is unknown. It features a traditional three-bay, two-courtyard layout. The building is 9.65 meters wide, 15.9 meters deep, and 6 meters high, covering an area of approximately 150 square meters.
