Battle Site of Changshankou

The Battle Site of Changshankou is located around Nanshan Reservoir in Changlong Village, Huangjiang Town. GPS coordinates: 22°50'15.4"N, 114°00'21.2"E, elevation 32 meters.

On May 8, 1948, Lin Wenhü, deputy commander of the Third Regiment of the Jiangnan Column of the Guangdong People’s Liberation Army, led the Steel Team to break through a three-pronged encirclement by a part of the 154th Brigade of the Kuomintang, the Lincun Self-Defense Force, the Guanlan Joint Defense Team, and a company of Kuomintang troops stationed in Tangxia at Changshankou. They killed or wounded 19 enemies. The Third Regiment lost 2 men, had 2 injured, and 1 captured.

On January 20, 1949, the Third Regiment of the First Column of the Dongjiang Brigade under the Guangdong–Jiangxi–Hunan Border Column of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army learned that a platoon of the KMT Dongguan County Security Police Battalion stationed in Meitang was returning from Tangxia to their post. As a result, the Third Regiment ordered He Tang, commander of the First Battalion, to lead the First Company on a forced march from Shangliudong and Xialiudong villages in Huangjiang to ambush the enemy at Boggau, the inevitable route through Changshankou.

When the First Company of the Third Regiment reached Changshankou and began ascending the mountain pass, the enemy they were waiting to ambush had already started descending. This turned the planned ambush into an encounter battle. Upon seeing the enemy, the Third Regiment’s First Company immediately launched a fierce charge and pushed them back. In this battle, over 10 enemies were killed or wounded, and one machine gun along with more than 20 rifles were captured.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a reservoir named Nanshan Reservoir was built in the middle of the battle site, while the two hilltops remain in their original state.
