Songbailang Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument

The Songbailang Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is located in Songbailang Village, Dalang Town, Dongguan City. It was built to commemorate six martyrs including Li Shaoqing, political commissar of the Mangbao Battalion of the Dongjiang Column, and one guerrilla fighter who sacrificed their life during the Liberation War.

On June 9, 1945, over 100 Japanese troops stationed in Liaobu, Dongguan, moved along the Guanzhang Highway to seize grain. The Mangbao Battalion of the First Detachment of the Dongjiang Column intercepted them at Libailing, killing or wounding 35 enemy soldiers. During the battle, Political Commissar Li Shaoqing and six other officers and soldiers bravely sacrificed their lives. At 5 p.m. that afternoon, the Mangbao Battalion stationed in Songbailang Village and local villagers held a grand funeral for the six anti-Japanese martyrs in the village. In the spring of 1948, villagers in the area buried a guerrilla fighter who had died fighting against the Kuomintang army alongside these martyrs.

In September 1961, following local traditional customs, the villagers of Songbailang placed the remains of the seven martyrs in a spirit pagoda, arranged in a straight line. In August 1963, a shrine-like structure was built to house the pagoda, forming the prototype of the monument. On December 2, 1983, with support from the Dalang District Office, the village rebuilt the site into the current monument. The memorial park measures 25.1 meters in length and 11.2 meters in width, covering an area of over 280 square meters. The base of the monument is 2.48 meters high, and the main body is 4.78 meters tall. The four-sided main body bears the inscription “Revolutionary Martyrs’ Monument” on the front, “Immortal Glory” on the left, and “Enduring Spirit” on the right. Below the main body is an inscription erected by the Dalang District Office. A spirit pagoda containing the martyrs’ remains is housed in a crypt in front of the monument, and two towering ancient cypresses stand in the front plaza of the memorial park.

Songbailang Village is located southwest of the central area of Dalang Town. It is a typical hilly region, covering a total area of 2.25 square kilometers. The area is divided into 10 villager groups, with a total of 967 households and a permanent population of 4,011.

Rich in cultural heritage. The Wen Guang Temple, an ancient temple preserved in Dalang Town, was first built in the seventh year of the Chongzhen era during the Ming Dynasty. It remains an active place of worship and is a Dongguan Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
