Zhushan Battle Site

The Zhushan Battle Site is located at Dunhuang Ridge in Zhushan Community, Dalang Town, with GPS coordinates: 22°57'54.0" N, 113°55'30.5" E, and an elevation of 28 meters.

On May 9, 1945, a Japanese squadron of over 100 troops stationed in Liaobu invaded Dalang along the Guan-Zhang Highway in an attempt to seize food supplies. When the Japanese troops were advancing along the Guan-Zhang section near Libeilin and Zhushan, the Mangbao Battalion of the First Detachment of the Dongjiang Column, under the command of Battalion Commander Shen Biao and Political Commissar Li Shaoqing, ambushed the enemy on Dunhuang Ridge in Zhushan based on the terrain. The Mangbao Battalion encircled the Japanese from all sides and launched a fierce assault, defeating them. The Japanese fled in disarray, with some retreating into the bamboo forests and getting pinned down in the rice paddies and at the foot of the hills. In this battle, 8 soldiers including Political Commissar Li Shaoqing of the Mangbao Battalion sacrificed their lives, and Battalion Commander Shen Biao and 10 others were wounded. A total of 35 Japanese soldiers were killed or injured. At 5 p.m. that day, the Mangbao Battalion stationed in Songbailang Village and local villagers held a solemn funeral for the anti-Japanese martyrs, including Li Shaoqing, in the village.

On December 2, 1983, with the support of the Dalang District Office, Songbailang Village renovated the spirit pagoda building that housed the martyrs’ remains into the current Songbailang Revolutionary Martyrs Monument on Guiwangdu Mountain in Songbailang Village.

Currently, the Zhushan Battle Site still retains a small hillside, on which five or six tiled houses are built.

It is only 6 kilometers away from Dongguan East Railway Station, a major hub of the South China railway network, making transportation very convenient. Zhushan covers a total area of 1.29 square kilometers, with a registered population of 1,627 and a migrant population of about 1,100. In 2006, the total collective assets amounted to 105.2 million yuan, with collective total income of 6.2 million yuan and net income of 3.72 million yuan.
