Battle Site of the Kuiyi Team

The Battle Site of the Kuiyi Team is located in Dasha Village, Dalingshan Town, with GPS coordinates: 22°55'58"N, 113°50'02"E, and an elevation of 30 meters.

On the morning of June 18, 1940, a Japanese squad of about forty to fifty soldiers, advancing in the rain from Wancheng toward Liangping Market, stormed directly into Dasha Market. The Dasha United Self-Defense Team, formed by the Dalingshan District Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, closed the market gates and fired at the enemy from within the walls. Hearing the gunfire, the Japanese organized an attack, attempting to charge into the market. Yin Tianci, a key member of the Dasha United Self-Defense Team and a Communist Party member, directed his team to fight back while beating a drum to send signals. The drumbeats reached the “Ten Alliance” self-defense villages of the Hongsheng Public Covenant. Within ten minutes, over ten self-defense members from the “Ten Alliance,” clad in kuiyi (straw capes), rushed in from all directions and surrounded the Japanese. The surrounding mountains echoed with the sound of battle, leaving the Japanese momentarily stunned. Realizing the dire situation, they retreated to Qiaotou Mountain to hold their ground. Encouraged by the enemy’s retreat, the self-defense team, in their first encounter with the Japanese, pursued them to Qiaotou Mountain. In the heavy rain, the Japanese saw densely armed “kuiyi figures” covering the hillsides and, unable to assess the situation, panicked and fled toward Liangping. The Kuiyi Team unleashed concentrated fire and gave chase all the way to Yangjiabie. Due to the torrential rain and flash floods, the waters of Yangjiabie surged violently. Trapped with no escape route ahead and pursuers behind, the Japanese were forced to cross the floodwaters. Over ten Japanese soldiers were washed away by the flood, while the rest fled in disarray.

Yin Jiunu, a member of the Dasha United Self-Defense Team, caught up with a fleeing Japanese soldier downstream, wrested his weapon in the raging current, and shot him dead. Yin Songxi, a member of the Longshan Village self-defense team, pushed a Japanese soldier into the river, seized his weapon, and then attempted to capture another when he was unfortunately shot and killed. Ye Linxiang, a member of the Dapianmei self-defense team, dragged a Japanese machine gun assistant gunner into the river, drowned him unconscious, and then used the soldier’s own bayonet to kill him. After the battle, the self-defense team recovered two abandoned Japanese rifles from the river. This first encounter between the Dalingshan anti-Japanese self-defense forces and the Japanese ended in victory, boosting the morale of the local population in their resistance against the invaders.

The Battle Site of the Kuiyi Team has now been replaced by residential buildings, factories, and roads.

Dasha Village: I. Geographic Location

Dasha Village is located in the northwest of Dalingshan Town, covering an area of 3.6 square kilometers. It consists of three natural villages: Dasha Village, Huangwu Village, and Xiashushan Village, bordering Jinju Village, Jichi Ling Village, and Taigongling Village. The village lies close to Tongsha Reservoir and is adjacent to the town center, Jilong Timber Market, Jilong Farmers Market, and Xinli International Agricultural Wholesale Market.

The village has five villager groups, with a registered population of 1,813 and an estimated floating population of around 4,000.
