Site of the Mashan Intelligence Post of the Third Battalion of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces
The site of the Mashan Intelligence Post of the Third Battalion of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces is located in Longyan Cave on the mountainside of Mashan in Baihuadong Village, Dalingshan Town. The cave entrance is situated next to the Qijie Temple on Mashan, with an opening about 0.5 meters high. This stone cave leads to the valley below the ancient temple, has multiple exits, and its interior passages vary between narrow and wide while being extremely winding. GPS coordinates: 22°54'22.4"N, 113°47'03.4"E, elevation 152 meters.
This intelligence post served as the main operational base for the Fourth and Fifth Platoons of the Third Battalion of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces in early 1941. After receiving their missions, intelligence operatives used the Qijie Temple on Mashan as their staging point. They would hide during the day and enter the villages after dark, sometimes moving to several locations within one night, before concealing the collected intelligence in this stone cave. In November 1943, when Japanese forces launched the “Ten-Thousand-Man Sweep” against the Dalingshan anti-Japanese base area, and facing a situation of enemy strength and our weakness, senior leaders of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces, headed by Wang Zuoyao, dispatched troops to block the Japanese advance while leading their forces up to Mashan Temple. That night, Wang Zuoyao, Yang Kanghua, Wu Qiang, and others set up a temporary command post inside the cave at Mashan Temple and held an emergency meeting. After analyzing the enemy situation, they decided to organize a nighttime breakout and conducted detailed planning for the operation. That night, the main guerrilla force successfully broke out along three routes. More than ten wounded who could not be evacuated were hidden in the cave, with an armed squad left behind to protect them.
In 1957, Ouyang Huansheng (now a retired cadre of Dalingshan Town) found old cooking utensils, clothing, and other daily items used by the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces in a relatively spacious area of the cave that resembled a hall, as well as bullets, shell casings, binoculars, and more.
In June 1993, the Mashan Intelligence Post site was designated as a Dongguan Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government.
