Shaoguan Tongtian Tower

Tongtian Tower, known as the "Midstream Tower Shadow," is one of the ancient Twenty-Four Scenic Spots of Qujiang.

Tongtian Tower was first built in the 25th year of the Ming Jiajing reign (1546), renovated in the 31st year of the Wanli reign (1603), and destroyed during the Xianfeng era of the Qing dynasty (1851–1861). When the Taiping Army, led by Hong Xiuquan, laid siege to Shaoguan but failed to breach the city, one of their generals climbed Tongtian Tower to observe the city’s defenses. The Qing defenders spotted him and fired cannons fiercely at the tower. The tower collapsed and was destroyed, and the Taiping general died a heroic death.

Through archaeological excavation, the site of the ancient Tongtian Tower has been preserved to this day. At a depth of 4.1 meters beneath the tower foundation, the base of the tower was revealed. A large number of blue bricks, tiles, and brick components were unearthed to the southwest of the tower, totaling 13 types and over 160 pieces. These artifacts hold architectural and archaeological value and have provided a basis for the reconstruction of Tongtian Tower.

Shaoguan Tongtian Tower was completed in its reconstruction on September 29, 2012, and a plaque-unveiling ceremony was held in the morning. This marked the tower’s return to its former site on Shazhou Island in Shaoguan City after nearly 160 years, bringing back the ancient Lingnan scenic wonder of the “Midstream Tower Shadow.”

Nowadays, during festive occasions, the municipal government holds fireworks shows on the river island. The diverse and dazzling fireworks attract residents from both sides of the three rivers to gather along the banks for viewing, adding even more festive atmosphere to Shaoguan City.
