Heilihe Nature Reserve is located in a temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest zone, characterized by dense forests, rich biodiversity, and a complex biota. Preliminary surveys have identified three vegetation types and 24 formations within the reserve. The forest resources of Heilihe Nature Reserve hold significant importance in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and serve as a crucial natural barrier for the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan area. Among these, the native Chinese pine alone covers a natural distribution area of 4,667 hectares—making it one of China’s largest and healthiest natural pine forests, and thus extremely precious. The reserve has become an important seed source breeding base for natural Chinese pines in China.

Known as the "Xishuangbanna of the North," Heilihe Nature Reserve boasts rolling peaks covered in lush greenery and a wide variety of wildlife, making it a prime destination for adventure, hunting, and eco-tourism. The reserve is home to 117 bird species, 33 mammal species, including 19 key protected bird species and 2 key protected mammal species. Among them, the golden eagle and the koklass pheasant (birds), as well as the leopard and the black bear (mammals), are critically endangered species that have drawn widespread public attention. Within its over 10,000 hectares of pristine forest, visitors can find dozens of tall tree species such as pine, cypress, maple, linden, oak, and birch, as well as valuable mountain delicacies like wild grapes, fiddlehead ferns, wood ear mushrooms, monkey head mushrooms, and daylilies. There are also wild fruits such as hawthorn, apricots, jujubes, and pears.

The area is also a paradise for birds and beasts, hosting precious bird species such as pheasants, warblers, eagles, great bustards, doves, magpies, thrushes, falcons, and herons. Predators like leopards, bears, wolves, foxes, lynxes, mountain rabbits, roe deer, badgers, and hedgehogs roam the forests. This region was once a favored hunting and leisure ground for scholars, artists, emperors, and nobles.

Heilihe Town: Located in the western part of Ningcheng County, Heilihe Town covers a total area of 312 square kilometers and has a population of 13,231. In 2003, its GDP totaled 38.8 million yuan, with an average per capita rural income of 1,102 yuan.
