Abu Mena Christian Site

Abu Mena was an early Christian holy city, featuring buildings such as churches, baptismal pools, ancient Roman basilicas, monasteries, public structures, streets, houses, and workshops. All of these were constructed over the tomb of a martyr—Menas of Alexandria, who died in 296 AD.

The monastery at Abu Mena, built in the 3rd century AD, was established to honor a soldier from Alexandria named Menas, who was an officer in Diocletian’s army. After the army’s victory, Menas refused to obey orders to persecute Christians. Moreover, he openly declared his Christian faith—an act that greatly inspired other Christians to endure the oppression and torture imposed by Diocletian’s forces.

The Abu Mena Monastery is located south of the city of Alexandria. Legend has it that on the journey to bring Menas’ body back from Phrygia, the camel carrying it suddenly stopped walking. As a result, Menas was buried where the camel halted. At the very same spot, a spring emerged in the desert. The presence of the water caused wild vines and olive trees to grow abundantly in the area. This oasis came to be known as the Sacred Vineyard of Menas. Today, only ruins and the desert remain as witnesses to what was once a beautiful oasis.
