Sapi and Chewore Safari Area

Mana Pools National Park, Sapi and Chewore Safari Area are located in the northeastern region of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, bordering Zambia. Mana Pools National Park was established in 1963 and covers an area of 2,196 square kilometers, while Sapi and Chewore Safari Area were established in 1964, covering 3,390 square kilometers and 1,180 square kilometers respectively. They encompass a vast area extending downstream along the Zambezi River, starting from the approximately 30-kilometer-long Mupata Gorge.

The Mupata Gorge has a high sediment content, resulting in the formation of numerous small islands and sandy beaches. Mana Pools National Park, Sapi and Chewore Safari Area are within the same grassland-forest biogeographic zone, where expansive grasslands connect with other vegetation communities, including small but significant montane plant formations. The valley floors are covered with a sparse, drought-deciduous shrubland known as "giraffe thorn" (Vachellia giraffae), while the sandbars and beaches along the Zambezi River support stands of silver clusterleaf (Terminalia sericea) and sparse African teak forests.

This area boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including several endangered species, notably the black rhinoceros. Chewore Safari Area is home to Africa’s largest population of black rhinos. Along the riverbanks and in the bush, there are over 380 species of birds and more than 6,500 African elephants, as well as the endangered Nile crocodile.
