The Global Liveability Survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in the UK reveals that Melbourne, Australia—once wealthy from its gold mining history—has stood out among 140 cities worldwide to claim the top spot as the world’s most liveable city for the third time. Meanwhile, Australia boasts a total of four cities in the top ten, making it the biggest winner of this survey.

The Global Liveability Survey evaluates cities based on factors such as social stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Melbourne scored full marks in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, knocking Austria’s Vienna (second place) and Canada’s Vancouver (third place) off the top to retain its championship title. Ranks four to seven go to Canada’s Toronto and Calgary, and Australia’s Adelaide and Sydney, with Calgary and Adelaide tied for fifth. Ranks eight to ten are Finland’s Helsinki, Australia’s Perth, and New Zealand’s Auckland. Taipei, Taiwan, ranks 61st in this survey and is also among the top ten cities with the most improvement over the past five years of evaluations.
Additionally, the bottom ten cities in the survey include Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, Papua New Guinea’s Port Moresby, Nigeria’s Lagos, Zimbabwe’s Harare, Algeria’s Algiers, Pakistan’s Karachi, Libya’s Tripoli, Cameroon’s Douala, and Iran’s Tehran. The Syrian capital Damascus, plagued by ongoing instability and recently hit by a chemical weapons attack, ranks last.
