World’s Most Livable City: Melbourne Takes the Crown, Taipei Ranks 61st

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its latest report on the world’s most livable cities, with Melbourne in Australia taking the top spot. Vienna in Austria secured second place, and Vancouver in Canada claimed third. Other cities in the top 10 include Toronto in Canada, Calgary in Canada, Adelaide in Australia, Sydney in Australia, Helsinki in Finland, Perth in Australia, and Auckland in New Zealand. Taipei ranked 61st with an overall score of 83.9. According to the scoring range, a score between 80 and 100 indicates that residents face very few problems in their daily lives.

The EIU surveyed 140 cities worldwide, with Melbourne in Australia being named the most livable city in the world. Vienna in Austria came in second, followed by Vancouver in Canada in third place. Other cities making the top 10 are, in order, Toronto in Canada, Calgary in Canada, Adelaide in Australia, Sydney in Australia, Helsinki in Finland, Perth in Australia, and Auckland in New Zealand. Taipei ranked 61st with an overall score of 83.9. According to the scoring criteria, a score between 80 and 100 means that people in the city face very few challenges in daily life.

In addition, Taipei was also among the 10 cities with the most significant improvement over the past five years, alongside Bogotá, the capital of Colombia; Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe; Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Algiers, the capital of Algeria; Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait; Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh; Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka; Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia; and Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

The EIU conducts its survey twice a year based on criteria such as safety, infrastructure, healthcare, culture and environment, and education. Damascus, the capital of Syria, which has been ravaged by civil war, ranked last among the 140 cities. The report also mentioned that unrest across various parts of China has led to a decline in the livability scores and rankings of several cities.
