Chizarira National Park

Chizarira National Park is located in the northern part of Zimbabwe, covering an area of approximately 2,000 square kilometers. As one of the largest national parks in the country, it remains one of Zimbabwe’s least known due to its isolated location on the edge of the Zambezi Escarpment. The park boasts a rich diversity of wildlife and breathtaking pristine natural scenery.

The vegetation in Chizarira National Park transitions from low-lying plants in the north to tall woodlands in the south. Waterfalls cascade down the steep cliffs from heights of around 600 meters into the Zambezi River valley, creating a magnificent landscape. The Mcheni and Lwizikululu rivers flow through the gorges of the escarpment. The most prominent landmark in the northeastern part of the park is Tundazi Mountain, which, according to local legend, is home to a gigantic serpent. The southern boundary of the park is marked by the Busi River, lined with pale-barked Acacia trees. Chizarira was declared a Game Reserve in 1938, upgraded to a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1963, and officially became a National Park in 1975, with its headquarters located in Manzituba.
