Ouargla

Ouargla is located in central Algeria and serves as the capital of Ouargla Province. It is known for its thriving oil industry and is also home to the University of Ouargla Kasdi Merbah. Legend has it that Ouargla was built by the Banu Wargla (Banu Wargla), and in recent years has developed into an important tourist destination.

Situated in a desert region, the area is rich in desert roses, which many visitors come to purchase at the market. In addition to these rare stones, the large market also offers antiques, traditional handicrafts, and lizard specimens. Not far from the main market is a weekend market, commonly referred to by locals, where daily necessities—primarily fruits and vegetables—are traded. The city is home to two ancient mosques, known as the Old Mosque and the Old Shiite Mosque, the former being the place where the city’s most renowned Muslim scholar once resided and studied.
