Yuangzigu Site

The Yuangzigu Site is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Yuangzigu Site, with a history of over 5,000 years, has been excavated since 1986 under the direction of Guo Suxin, a renowned local archaeologist. To date, an area of 2,000 square meters has been unearthed. A total of 28 cave-style dwellings and 43 semi-subterranean houses have been excavated, along with hundreds of polished stone tools including stone axes, stone knives, stone shovels, stone sickles, stone grinding plates, stone grinding rods, as well as various pottery household items. The floors and walls of the site’s houses were constructed using white lime plastering, much of which remains well-preserved to this day. Near the house sites, multiple small kilns used for firing pottery and pools for preparing lime have also been discovered. Professor Yan Wenming, then head of the Archaeology Department at Peking University, personally investigated the site and concluded that the discovery of such a large number of clearly laid-out Neolithic cave dwellings is indeed rare. Judging from the architectural style and relatively standardized construction of the caves, one might even speculate whether specialized construction workers existed at the time. The archaeological findings from both the Yuangzigu Site and the Laohushan Site provide extremely valuable physical evidence for the study of civilization and the origins of statehood in northern China...
