Vila Nova de Gaia is a city in northern Portugal, under the jurisdiction of the Porto District. It is located on the southern bank of the mouth of the Douro River, facing Porto across the river. The city is famous for its wine cellars used for storing wine, with the renowned Port wine primarily stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, making them a major tourist attraction.

Vila Nova de Gaia is known for its extensive coastline, stretching 17 kilometers, making it a rare beach holiday destination. It is a city abundant in beaches and was ranked the Portuguese city with the most Blue Flag beaches in both 2009 and 2010. It still boasts numerous clean, white-sand beaches, making it a popular spot for travel and leisure. Along the coastline, there are many attractions to explore, including quaint chapels, picturesque fishing villages, and vast farmlands — the latter being the birthplace and childhood home of the Portuguese poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
