Quedlinburg is located in central northern Germany, on the edge of the Harz Mountains and by the Bode River, an area also home to two other prominent hills. Founded in the 10th century, Quedlinburg was once an imperial capital and a trading hub. It is a model of a medieval European town, preserving numerous high-quality wooden buildings.

The moat follows the irregular outline of the defensive walls, parts of which are protected. The narrow, winding alleys of the old town date back to the 10th century. The newer sections of the town were built according to a unified plan in the 12th century, forming a medieval layout. The center of the old town, near the main square, is the well-known market. A castle was built on the hill, surrounded by buildings that form the city’s unique core.

Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture are spread throughout the town, creating a distinctive architectural landscape. The St. Servatius Collegiate Church, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, is an extremely important structure in the city. Numerous half-timbered houses from the 15th to 17th centuries feature intricate craftsmanship and line the curved streets and squares of the town.
