Magdeburg is located on the banks of the Elbe River and is the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It is the second-largest city in the state after Halle and one of the three independent cities. The city is one of Europe’s important medieval cities and is renowned for having once been the seat of Emperor Otto I's imperial palace.
