Wittenberg

Wittenberg is the capital of Wittenberg District in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, located in the eastern part of the state on the banks of the Elbe River, east of Dessau-Roßlau, south of Fläming, and north of the Dübener Heide. In the 16th century, it was one of Germany’s most important political, cultural, historical, and artistic centers, with its old town being the starting point of the Reformation. The buildings from various periods hold significant importance in German history.

The historic sites of Wittenberg have long been must-visit destinations for tourists. Lutherhaus, Melanchthonhaus, Stadtkirche, and Schlosskirche were designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. Wittenberg’s Schloss and Schlosskirche are major tourist attractions, commemorating key sites of the Reformation. The Stadtkirche is the birthplace of the Reformation, where the world’s first Protestant mass was held in 1521. Martin Luther preached here, and the church preserves fine artworks, including those by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. Melanchthonhaus is a Renaissance building where Philipp Melanchthon lived and died, and it also hosts an exhibition about his life. In addition, Wittenberg Theater, the Renaissance-style Town Hall, and others are also worth visiting.
