Rupununi Tropical Savanna

The Rupununi Tropical Savanna is situated at the border between the Rupununi River and Brazil, comprising a natural expanse of tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and habitats for diverse wildlife. The sight of animals roaming the plains, birds flying overhead, and vegetation swaying in the breeze paints a majestic picture of the open tropical grassland. This region is home to a wealth of wildlife, including permanent residents such as jaguars and harpy eagles, which have made it their natural habitat.

Although the Rupununi Tropical Savanna lies within an arid tropical zone, the rainy season from May to August brings frequent flooding, providing much-needed water for the thirsty wildlife. Within the savanna, visitors can also find small indigenous villages and large cattle ranches built by local ranchers. Some of the shepherds are descendants of 19th-century Scottish settlers who established themselves here, living traditional lives and becoming an integral part of the Rupununi landscape while contributing to its preservation.
