Kiln Roll Tribe
Nestled within the Amis tribal community—Lu’an, Kiln Roll Tribe was originally just a gathering place for the community but later gained a reputation and expanded into a restaurant. It maximizes the use of the “kiln” to bake handmade bread and offers a pizza DIY service.

Amis mothers also prepare creative light meals using wild greens, named the “Herbivore Herbal Health Meal.” The main dish features pickled leek pork, accompanied by garlic chive stir-fried with salted egg and a dash of Shaoxing wine, deep-fried mulberry leaf rolls wrapped in non-GMO tofu skin, fragrant mushroom omelet, and imperial vegetable soup. Lin Liuying, the community committee chairperson, mentioned that the side wild vegetables change with the seasons, offering different flavors. Additionally, due to the community-operated nature, guests are advised to call ahead or inquire via the fan page.

Economic Snack Bar
Located near the Huan Shan Township Office in Taitung, the charming Economic Snack Bar is marked by a cute and eye-catching kitchenware robot made by the owner, Xiao Li. Upon entering, the corridor walls are covered with reports about the snack bar, making it somewhat of a local celebrity. Xiao Li emphasizes that all dishes are zero-mileage, focusing on local rural produce and traditional cuisine, aiming to bring back the good old days of agricultural life.

Having run the Economic Snack Bar for eight years, Xiao Li continuously develops new dishes, such as plum fried rice using rice grown by his father-in-law and plums contracted from the Dianguang community, paired with his own chicken, vegetables grown by his grandmother, and the signature fried tofu pudding, combined into the “Lianlian Lilong Flavor” set meal. Named after Huan Shan’s former name, Lilong, it conveys the heartfelt hospitality of early farming families preparing lavish meals for guests.

▲% Artisan Workshop [Name?] A Hidden Gem with Scenic Views.

Guyana Workshop
Originating from the Bunun phrase “Kaiana,” the Guyana Workshop allows travelers to experience Bunun life firsthand. From threshing millet, pounding it with a mortar, sifting the husks, washing the grains, and pounding millet into flour—to learning the techniques and wisdom behind steaming millet rice—they conclude with tasting the delicious millet rice and sharing in the communal joy of “Guyana.” The set meal “Bumi Bumi” symbolizes the Bunun staple—traditional millet rice—that must never be missed.

To pass on traditional Bunun cuisine and culture, Guyana presents the “Bumi Bumi” set, centered around traditional millet rice, paired with bamboo shoot bone soup, four main dishes including sweet potato pork skewers, fermented glutinous rice braised pork, bitter greens, and pan-fried fish; plus three side dishes like Bunun-style pickled mustard green sprouts, beetroot, and olive-like pear. The menu varies seasonally with fresh, local ingredients. The millet rice here isn’t served with peanut powder as commonly seen, but instead with lard and wrapped with pork and olive-like pear, which is quite unique. Moreover, Guyana’s homemade millet wine is exceptional—sweet with a slight kick that makes you want to sip more.

▲% Cozy Pizza Spot [Name?] Blending Local Flavors with Classic Dishes.

Marquee Pizza
Created by Amis princess More and her Canadian husband Michael, Marquee Pizza originally operated a handmade wood-fired pizza shop in Taichung, building a loyal customer base. Due to lease issues, they returned to Chihshang, Taitung to start anew. In addition to their signature “pizza,” they create dishes combining locally sourced ingredients.

Using rice grown by his father, local carrots, tomatoes, and pork, they make “Roman Tomato Pork Rice,” which is sweet and sour and pairs perfectly with rice. Though it has a Western name, it’s essentially a classic Chinese dish. Another standout is Michael’s signature artichoke flatbread, beloved back in Taichung, featuring a unique artichoke dipping sauce that leaves diners wanting more—also a common dish at Canadian home parties.

Not far from Brown Road, nestled among rice paddies and modest houses, a small restaurant and homestay surrounded by a serene, secluded garden—this is Life 21 House, a dream project jointly founded by Wei and Hui, both former military police officers.

The head chef, Hui, explains that the restaurant mainly presents local ingredients in Western-style dishes, with a focus on chicken cuisine. The Provence Herb Set features chicken raised locally in Taitung as the main dish, seasoned with rosemary and Italian herbs, accompanied by seasonal persimmons and pumpkin as sides, and even the rice is specially selected organic white rice—simple yet allowing the most authentic flavors to shine.

Shandong Snacks
A Shandong woman who married and moved to Chihshang serves up hometown flavors using Shandong dishes from her memories, prepared with locally sourced Taitung ingredients. Known as the “Din Tai Fung of Chihshang,” Shandong Snacks started as a handmade soup dumpling street stall and has since grown into a full-fledged shop. The signature “Original Shandong” set centers around handmade soup dumplings, served with a soup made from locally grown tomatoes, complemented by crisp, refreshing side dishes, fruit, and herbal tea grown by the owner, Brother Tang. The dumpling wrappers here are uniquely colored—purple from the addition of Chihshang’s black rice—and their striking hue is even more appetizing. Letting them sit for two or three minutes before eating enhances their chewy texture.

Luye Jiemi Home
In the Baruya Pai tribe of Luye, Taitung, there’s a backpacker inn run by Jiemi, who moved from the city. Having lived in Luye for over three years, Jiemi has made many friends and often receives vegetables and fruits grown by them. Jiemi turns these fresh ingredients into meals for guests, saving them the trouble of searching for breakfast and letting them enjoy the abundance of local produce right after waking up.

Jiemi named the breakfast “Good Morning, Luye,” featuring rice as the star in two flavors of savory and sweet rice balls. The sweet version contains seasonal jam or peanut butter made and grown by local friends; the savory one is a bonito flakes and meat floss rice ball, using bonito flakes from Chihshang’s Quanmeihang and handmade miso from Longtian Village in Luye. With simple cooking methods that highlight the original taste of the ingredients, the sides change with the season—currently featuring mashed pumpkin with roselle preserves and stir-fried baby corn with seasonal beans. The fruit is specially selected red leaf village’s native pineapple, while the drinks include pineapple enzyme diluted with water at a 1:3 ratio and Luye-grown Red Oolong tea.

Chihshang. Bean House
Bean Brother Zhang Zhizhong, committed to making soy products from Taiwanese soybeans, not only collaborates with small farmers in the Jianan Plain but also runs the Chuanciao Old House Tofu Workshop in Gongguan, Miaoli. By chance, he came to Chihshang in Taitung and was inspired to revive soybean farming there. In the form of a community tofu shop, he encourages small farmers in Hualien and Taitung to grow soybeans.

The shop sells a variety of soy products such as tofu, soy milk, dried tofu, and tofu pudding, all handmade using different kinds of Taiwanese soybeans and salt brine. Beyond these, Bean Brother also offers a creative dish set—the “Bean Brother Set”—which includes Italian-style cold bean curd, black tofu with homemade bean paste, and white tofu with soy sauce and bonito flakes. These three distinct tofu dishes are paired with new products like okara crackers, self-grown vegetables, and brown rice, allowing guests to savor the genuine taste of Chihshang’s land.

Bean Brother also shared that while most people think of Chihshang as just a land of rice, it actually used to grow soybeans too, which served as a cash crop during off-seasons. He hopes that by running his shop and producing more soy products, he can show local farmers the market potential of soybeans, encourage them to resume soybean cultivation, and elevate Chihshang to a “land of rice and beans.”

Bayang Amis Gourmet
The Kao family, who moved from Hengchun and have lived in Chihshang for over 90 years, run the Kao Family Rice Barn, selling rice they grow themselves, and also operate an Amis-style homestay. The sixth-generation member, Kao Hsiao-yuan, has a unique vision—to preserve and pass on the wild vegetable culture of the Amis people. Together with her mother, she established the Kao Family Rice Barn kitchen “Bayang Amis Gourmet,” where, in their nearly century-old family courtyard, they share Amis culture and stories with travelers through food.

Bayang Amis Gourmet serves meals in their family courtyard, hosting guests under camphor trees. Paired with the mother’s gentle storytelling of the Amis migration, and a cool breeze, it’s a truly relaxing experience. The dinner starts with an appetizer of onions, mixed with seasonal ingredients like plums, pineapples, and tomatoes. This complements the freshly grilled pork belly marinated with leeks and garlic. There’s also sticky rice as a gesture of welcome, a glass of lemon or roselle-flavored millet wine, and a wild vegetable soup made from momordica, bamboo shoots, and bitter greens. The dessert also carries Amis flair, made with four kinds of seasonal fruits, ice, and glutinous rice wine.

Barbecuing is the Amis’ version of afternoon tea—after hunting, they often grill meat and cook wild vegetable soup to fill up. Kao Hsiao-yuan wants others to experience this Amis lifestyle, so she offers this kind of Amis-style afternoon tea. Unlike typical restaurants that serve pancakes and coffee, here you get two skewers of grilled meat and a glass of millet wine—raw, passionate, simple, and beautiful.

▲%Avoid missing out on the charm of Chihsiang’s hidden gem — the “Chihsiang Grab (WOW) Bento.”

Source Natural Kitchen
After working away from home for many years, the couple Xiao Luo and Yixian returned to their hometown of Chihsiang to establish “Source Natural Kitchen.” They reclaimed rice fields that had been left fallow for years and cultivated them using eco-friendly, land-friendly natural farming methods. They sell their own-grown white rice, purple rice, brown rice, and health rice, and have combined these grains with local ingredients to create the creative flower sushi “Chihsiang Grab (WOW) Bento.”

Come experience farm work in Xiao Luo’s fields — transplanting seedlings, weeding — and get a taste of a farmer’s hard labor. After the hard work, enjoy the “Chihsiang Grab (WOW) Bento,” wrapped in kaffir lime leaves, featuring six sushi flavors made from four types of rice: silky-textured taro sushi, purple sweet potato sushi, Hakka-style |?jia Wei Jin, egrets-flavored |?wei Jin, richly flavored |?wei Jin, and more.

▲%Avoid missing out on the unique experience of dining inside an old school turned restaurant.

United Elementary School Puzzle-Themed Restaurant
United Elementary School is a Hakka-style restaurant that has been in business for over 30 years. The second-generation owner, Chef A-Yong, is passionate about puzzles and has incorporated them into the restaurant, offering customers fun, brain-teasing puzzles to play with while waiting for their food. In recent years, with the government promoting the quick-growing golden banana radish, Chef A-Yong has devoted himself wholeheartedly to it — from planting, harvesting, pickling, to developing new dishes.

The restaurant's most popular signature dish is undoubtedly the “Old Preserved Radish Flavor Sausage.” Made using traditional curing methods and a blend of preserved radishes of different ages — old, medium, and young — paired with the savory flavor of Guanshan’s fresh pork, it took about a year and numerous recipe tweaks to perfect. Chef A-Yong noted that unlike typical thinly sliced sausages, these are specially cut into chunks using a rolling knife technique to preserve the rich umami of the preserved radish.
