St. George's Cathedral, Guyana

St. George's Cathedral is located in the city center of Georgetown and serves as the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese. Construction of the church began in 1810 and was completed in 1892. After several reconstructions and renovations, the existing white building was designed by British architect Blofeld.

The church stands 43.5 meters tall and is said to be one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. It is built in the Gothic architectural style using Guyanese greenheart wood and British oak. With its pristine white walls, high steps, and delicate windows, the church presents an exterior that is both unassuming and majestic, making it an iconic landmark of Georgetown. The cathedral features stained glass windows on all four sides, which are bright, spacious, and uniquely styled, adorned with many colorful illustrations. The beautiful chandelier above the altar was a gift from Queen Victoria upon the completion of St. George's Cathedral. The pillars inside the hall are made from Guyanese greenheart wood, giving the appearance of cast iron and exhibiting incredible hardness.

At the front of the church’s main hall stands a square altar, behind which is a statue of Jesus crucified. On the side walls are two notable sculptures: one depicts a beautiful angel, whose exposed bare foot is crystal-clear, smooth, and lifelike, identical to a real foot; the other is a statue of Marcel Smith, characterized by elegant lines, realistic modeling, and vivid expression.
