Sükhbaatar Square

Sükhbaatar Square is the central square of Ulaanbaatar and is known as the "Tiananmen" of Ulaanbaatar. The square is named after Sükhbaatar, a hero of the 1921 Mongolian Revolution, and features a statue of Sükhbaatar on horseback at its center, located right in front of the Government Palace.

Before 1989, Sükhbaatar Square had been an important site for the public, youth, and military—such as in 1966 when the Mongolian people held large-scale events here during the visit of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. Today, it remains a key location for major national ceremonies, cultural events, and exhibitions in Mongolia. Foreign heads of state visiting Mongolia typically pay their respects to the statue of Sükhbaatar in the square. Standing in the square and looking south, you can also see Chinggis Khaan Mountain outside the city, which features a massive portrait of Chinggis Khaan covering one entire side of the mountain. No matter where you are in Ulaanbaatar, you can look up and see this grand image of Chinggis Khaan—it’s truly spectacular.
