Hong Kong’s famous actor Daniel Wu teamed up with Shanghai architect Zhang Hai’ao to build a yurt-style grassland starry sky library named “Mulan Fang” in the Mulan Weichang region, located at the border between Hebei and Inner Mongolia in China. With an appearance resembling a traditional yurt and set against the stark beauty of a wilderness where temperatures can drop to minus 30 degrees, its uniquely innovative architectural design was even shortlisted for the 2018 architectural equivalent of the Oscars — the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Prize.

The circular skylight of Mulan Fang brings in natural light
The exterior of the starry sky library features the shape of a yurt, constructed using natural materials such as aged wooden beams, rattan, and rough-hewn stone blocks, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature. It is complemented by six surrounding square spaces with glass curtain walls and a perforated roof that offers views of the starry sky.
