Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts

The Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1905 in downtown Ulaanbaatar, featuring a collection mainly focused on prehistoric and early 20th-century Mongolian art. Initially constructed by a Russian businessman, the building has functioned as a Chinese bank, Soviet Red Army office, and department store over different historical periods. It was renovated in 1966 and officially opened to the public as an art museum on July 23 of the same year.

Named after Mongolia’s greatest artist, Zanabazar (1635–1723), the museum houses a permanent collection of 10,000 artworks, including paintings and sculptures, some of which are by Zanabazar himself. Five hundred of these pieces are displayed on the second floor. These works are categorized by theme, such as prehistoric art, Zanabazar’s creations, thangka paintings, silk embroidery, nomadic traditions, and works by 20th-century master B. Sharav. Visitors can explore according to their personal interests.
