Gobi Desert

The Gobi Desert, also known as Gobi, means "desert," "gravel desert," or "arid place" in Mongolian, while in Chinese it is also called "Hanhai Desert," "Gobi Beach," or "Gobi Desert." It is a type of desert characterized by relatively flat terrain covered with large areas of gravel. The surface of the Gobi is mostly not sand but exposed rocks.

The Gobi is one of the world’s great deserts and semi-desert regions, stretching across the vast lands of Central Asia. Historically, it was an essential part of the Mongol Empire and home to several important cities along the Silk Road. It spans the southern part of Mongolia and the vast northern and northwestern regions of China: extending north to the Altai Mountains and the Mongolian grasslands, southwest to the Hexi Corridor and the Tibetan Plateau, and southeast to the North China Plain.

The Gobi stretches approximately 1,610 kilometers from southwest to northeast and 800 kilometers from north to south. It is widest in the west, covering an area of about 1,295,000 square kilometers as of 2007 statistics, making it the largest desert region in Asia. With relatively high elevation and latitude, the Gobi experiences low temperatures, as well as significant annual and daily temperature variations. Vegetation is sparse and rare, mostly consisting of low shrub-like plants found on plateaus and plains at the foot of mountains. The animal life is relatively diverse, including large mammals such as wild camels, Mongolian wild asses (Equus hemionus), dziggetai, and dzeren, as well as rodents like marmots and pocket gophers.
