Zhushan Memorial Monument

The Zhushan Anti-Japanese Memorial Monument is located on a mountain in the southern part of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. It was primarily built to commemorate the Soviet and Mongolian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II. It is not only a favorite destination for school outings across Mongolia but also the most popular location for students to hold graduation ceremonies, making it one of the most important sites for patriotic education in Mongolia.

The overall structure of the Zhushan Memorial Monument is circular, with a ring-shaped wall adorned with ceramic tiles. The tile designs revolve around the theme of friendship between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and Mongolia, vividly depicting key historical moments such as the USSR’s support for Mongolia’s independence in 1921, the Soviet military’s victory over the Japanese Kwantung Army at the Mongolia border in 1939, and major events including the former Soviet space flights. In addition, the site of the Zhushan Anti-Japanese Memorial Monument offers the best panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar. As you climb the 300 steps and turn to look over the city, the entire urban landscape of Ulaanbaatar unfolds before your eyes, along with the Tuul River flowing quietly through the city.

In 2003, the Tank Monument, originally located at the intersection of Zhushan and the city center, was moved to the foot of the hill where the Zhushan Anti-Japanese Memorial Monument stands. The Tank Monument was funded by donations from the Mongolian people and includes a route map indicating the path taken in 1943 by an army that departed from Moscow to fight in the German capital, Berlin.
