Orkhon Waterfall

The Orkhon River is the longest river in Mongolia, originating from the Khangai Mountains in Arkhangai Aimag. It flows northward for 1,124 kilometers before joining the Selenge River at the Mongolian-Russian border. The Orkhon River is longer than the Selenge River, with its main tributaries being the Tuul River and the Tamir River. In 2004, UNESCO designated the Orkhon Valley as a World Heritage Site.

Before merging with the Orkhon River, the Ulaan Gol River flows over a 25-meter-high basalt cliff, forming the famous Orkhon Waterfall. The waterfall's water is very cold but very clear, making it quite suitable for swimming. However, Mongolians generally do not swim here because of a local myth that says the pool beneath the waterfall is bottomless, and anyone who goes in will never come out. The Orkhon Waterfall is rich in fish resources, and it is said that the catfish there can exceed one meter in length, making it a great spot for fishing.
