Flaming Cliffs

The official name of Flaming Cliffs is Bayanzag, located in the Gobi region of Ömnögovi Province in Mongolia. Flaming Cliffs is the common name for Bayanzag, derived from the vast expanse of fiery red cliffs scattered across this area. They sit in the Gobi Desert, where the sky is high and clouds are sparse, offering extremely open views, and their vivid forms can be seen from afar. Especially during sunset, the sweeping red hues of the sky reflect off the continuous cliffs, creating a truly magnificent and captivating sight.

Few places on Earth are as remote as Flaming Cliffs. Pioneer American paleontologist and explorer Roy Chapman Andrews conducted five groundbreaking expeditions to the area between 1922 and 1930. Andrews and his team discovered a wealth of dinosaur fossils beneath the towering cliffs, including the world’s first discovery of dinosaur eggs and complete nests buried under rust-red sand, propelling the site to international fame as a renowned tourist destination.
