Khangai Mountains

The Khangai Mountains, historically known as the Yanshan or Yanran Mountains (not to be confused with the Yan Mountains near Beijing), were later called the Ötüken Mountains during the late Northern and Southern Dynasties period. They are a mountain range located in central Mongolia, stretching in a northwest-southeast direction. Spanning across Zavkhan Province, Övörkhangai Province, and Arkhangai Province, the range extends approximately 700 kilometers in length, with its main peak, Otgontenger, rising to an elevation of 4,031 meters.

The Khangai Mountains serve as the boundary between Mongolia’s inland drainage basin and its outward-flowing river systems. The Selenge River and the Orkhon River both originate from the northern slopes of the range, flowing northward through Russia before eventually emptying into the Arctic Ocean, making the mountains an important watershed dividing the Arctic-bound and inland river basins of the country. The northern slopes are covered with coniferous forests, while the southern slopes feature vast grassland pastures and hot springs, with several resort areas built for relaxation and vacationing.
