Kathmandu

Kathmandu is located in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, at the confluence of the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers. It is the capital and largest city of Nepal. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the city enjoys a pleasant climate, elegant surroundings, and spring-like weather all year round, earning it the reputation of a “paradise in the mountains.”

Kathmandu is an ancient city divided into a new town and an old town. Its architecture blends traditional Nepalese styles with Western influences, offering a unique charm. Abundant sunshine and lush pine and cypress trees are among Kathmandu’s most distinctive features. Beyond these natural beauties, the ancient city is also renowned for its elegant buildings and exquisite wood carvings, representing the culture and symbol of Nepal. Due to its long history, Kathmandu is home to numerous palaces, temples, stupas, and monasteries, with over 2,700 shrines of various sizes. It is truly a place where “there is a temple every five steps and a monastery every ten,” with religious structures visible in every corner. Among the many religious sites in Kathmandu, the most famous and popular is the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the four major Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva on the Indian subcontinent. Other notable sites include the Boudhanath Stupa, Taleju Temple, and Krishna Temple.

The temples, monasteries, stupas, and statues within Kathmandu hold significant historical and cultural value, with a rich variety of relics. In 1980, it was listed by UNESCO as one of the 18 key ancient cities in Asia meriting protection.
