Thamel is a must-visit destination for backpackers or independent travelers coming to Nepal. It is not only a designated tourist area for international visitors, but also a travel paradise that combines accommodation, food, and shopping all in one. Thamel (pronounced "tha-mel"), an iconic district in Kathmandu’s old city, is where foreign tourists gather. Its narrow and bustling alleyways are crammed with all the little shops travelers could need. It takes less than half an hour to walk from Thamel to Durbar Square, passing through alleyways, squares, and small temples — making it the best walking route to experience the old city.
