Ashoka Pillar in Nepal
• A representative structure of the Maurya Dynasty, built by Emperor Ashoka when he visited the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama. It was also recorded by the monk Xuanzang.
Attraction Introduction
The Ashoka Pillar stands to the west of the Maya Devi Temple. The pillar is 7.79 meters tall and has a circumference of over 2 meters. At a height of 3 meters from the ground, there is an inscription in Brahmi script that reads: “Here was born the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama.” These pillars are like markers set in time, not only giving an accurate date to a period of ancient Indian history but also confirming that the Buddha was a real, historical figure.
