Introduction

“Every emperor takes his turn, and this year it’s my turn.” The Malaysian monarchy is established in this rather unique way. The King of Malaysia is chosen in rotation among the hereditary Sultans of nine states, serving a five-year term. As a result, every five years, a new King is enthroned at the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is located south of Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and is a golden-domed, white-walled building. Originally the residence of a wealthy Chinese merchant, it was sold in 1926 and converted into the Royal Palace of the Sultan of Selangor. Nowadays, it serves as the residence of the Sultan who holds the title of King, while the other Sultans have their own palaces in their respective states. The Royal Palace is not open to the public, but visitors can admire its exterior and watch the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. If you time your visit well, you might witness the ceremony marking the transition between the outgoing and incoming Kings. During this occasion, the palace is adorned with dazzling lights and decorations. The King walks on a yellow carpet symbolizing royal dignity, while other dignitaries and guests walk on a red carpet.    Transportation
