The National Museum of Malaysia was built in 1963 and is located in the western suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. As a national comprehensive museum, it is also one of the most important museums in the country. The museum is a two-story classical Malay building in the "Minangkabau" style. Though not very grand, it looks very elegant.

On both sides of the museum’s entrance are two huge murals depicting Malaysian cultural history. The murals are 35.1 meters long and 6 meters high. The left mural illustrates the full range of traditional handicraft production in Malaysia, while the right mural portrays key historical scenes from the Hindu (and Buddhist) period in northern Malaysia during the 12th century to the country’s independence in 1957. Inside, the museum is divided into four exhibition halls displaying historical and economic materials of Malaysia, Malay customs and traditions, as well as models of local tropical plants and animals. Many exquisitely crafted artworks and excavated relics are on display, along with items related to nature, history, art, and folklore, animal specimens, and wax figures showcasing traditional costumes and customs through the ages.

The museum also exhibits Chinese porcelain unearthed in Johor's Rama region dating back to the 16th century, Ming dynasty porcelain specially made for Muslims in the 15th century, as well as materials on Malaysian shadow puppetry and shadow plays from around the world.
