The National Mosque of Malaysia is a mosque located in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and serves as the country's national mosque, capable of accommodating 15,000 worshippers for Friday prayers. The mosque was built on the site of a former Christian church. Its construction began in 1957 and was completed in 1965. It was originally intended to be named after Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, but he declined and suggested that the mosque be named “National” to celebrate Malaysia’s bloodless independence.

Unlike traditional mosques, the National Mosque of Malaysia gives off a modern and stylish vibe at first glance. It lacks a massive dome or intricate ornamentation, instead presenting an open, airy, and minimalist design that exudes a light yet dignified aura. Its towering minarets and star-shaped roof make it truly distinctive. The main prayer hall is magnificent, covered with a 16-pointed blue concrete star-shaped roof, and the minarets stand 73 meters tall, symbolizing an open and closed umbrella respectively — a design that subtly reflects Malaysia’s climate.

Visiting the mosque is free, but those who wish to enter the interior must dress modestly. Shoes must be removed before entering, and visitors wearing tank tops or shorts are not allowed. Women are required to wear a robe, but non-Muslims are not permitted inside and can only view the mosque from the entrance.
